The first time I learned about the surfing mindset was when I was introduced to surfing in 2015. I was living in San Diego and spent a lot of time at the beach. No matter where you looked, you were guaranteed to see surfing.
But it wasn’t just waves and surfboards. It was a way of life. There is so much you can learn from surfing.
Let me share with you a few things that I learned. Maybe you can take these lessons and apply them to whatever is going on in your life at the moment.
1. You can’t beat mother nature
There are laws that govern this planet. Laws that transcend the societal rules that we tend to follow. And you can’t beat them. So its like what they say…”If you can’t beat them, then join them.”
The laws of the universe have been written and taught through the ages. In my opinion, one of the best sources to learn of these laws is THE BIBLE. But there are several more sources out there that teach how the Universe works. I advise that you learn them. Because as hard as you may try, you can’t beat mother nature. If you try, you will quickly learn that her forces will topple you off your board like an ant being flicked off the kitchen table.
2. Timing is everything
Time it wrong and the ocean will send you back to the shore begging for mercy. Time it wrong and the waves will pass right under you.
In order to time things properly when surfing, you have to be in tune with the waves. When making your way past the break, you have to know how many waves are approaching and how far apart they are. The same applies when you are actually trying to catch the waves.
Life is full of patterns. There are up and downs. And just like the waves, that pattern will continue for the rest of time. So plan your moves according to the patterns of life. When you are going up, enjoy the moment but know that soon you will have to ride a down. Don’t let this catch you off guard.
Similarly, when you are on a down (funk) , know that an up is right around the corner. Use the time wisely and be ready when the TIME comes to make your move.
3. Surf with your Soul
When I was first introduced to surfing, I was mesmerized by the athletes in the water doing the tricks, spins, and turns. That’s who I wanted to be. But that was the young me.
The mature me relates more to the “Soul Surfer”, the person who rides the waves for calmness, peace, and serenity. To the soul surfer, the waves provide a spiritual recharge. Every wave is an opportunity to proclaim oneness with the universe.
And I think that’s how we should all play life. We should strive to be one with the universe. Take the time to identify your purpose and ride that wave. It’s the one for you and when you ride it, you will experience similar calmness, peace, and serenity.
