¡No Whey! My TOP 3 Vegan Protein Powders

fit latinas stef cantu¡No whey, soy vegan!

If you see what I did there, let’s be friends! I swear, I’ll print that on a shirt one day.

But it’s true…..

Well mostly.

I am vegan[ish]. I predominantly eat plant-based. I’m also a triathlete, Ironman 140.6 finisher, health coach, fitness group instructor, and founder of Fit Latinas. I live and breath health & fitness.

That’s my street cred’.

I truly believe in the importance of nutritional supplementation.

However, protein powder is HIGHLY overrated.

People tend to blindly follow a trend and end up doing more harm than good.

Here’s what you DON’T want in a protein powder:

1. Artificial sweeteners
Sucralose, splenda, aspartamine, equal, NutraSweet, or saccharin. Just say NO!

2. Soy
Most soy comes from Genetically Modified Organism (GMO) sources with high pesticide use. This can cause hormonal imbalance and suppressed thyroid function. GMO’s are not our friends.

3. Fillers
Fillers like milk powder/coconut flour, etc, are added to bulk up the protein. This is a cheap trick of the trade often found in low grade proteins. NO fillers just winners!

4. >25g
You don’t need anything greater than 25g of protein. I’d say 25 is even on the high end. Check your labels!

5. Rice Protein
“Be weary of” rice proteins as they are mostly a source for low grade RICE.

…and if you opt for a whey protein

6. WPC (Whey protein concentrate)

What you want is the best and that’s protein isolate. Whey protein isolate is to whey protein concentrate as a filet minion is to a ( greasy) hamburger patty.

For the past 8 years, I have tested tons of vegan protein powders.

Through trial and error, I have narrowed down my top 3 vegan protein powder selections.

My TOP 3 Vegan Protein Powders

  1. Shakeology (Ol’ faithful)

Shakeology has been my DAILY religious supplement since 2010. It is both my daily multivitamin and vegan protein supplement. It’s  packed with superfoods, digestive enzymes, phytonutrients and the flavor is amazing! You can drink it as an entire meal or you can drink it as a light healthy snack. Choose from Vanilla, Chocolate, Cafe latte or Tropical. My personal favorite is the Barista Triple Combo Pack ( chocolate, vanilla, cafe latte.)

People become apologetic for sharing affiliate links. I will NEVER be apologetic or shy away from saying I am a distributor of Shakeology. I share what I love and love what I share. You can purchase a sampler pack from my online store but PLEASE let me know. I’d like to coach you through the process email: stef@fitlatinas.com

2. Sunwarrior

I like the price, flavor and there’s no bloat. This is one of the best tasting nutritious off the shelf protein powders with the best value. I drink 1 shake a day as my afternoon pre-workout snack. It is highly versatile, you can choose from chocolate, vanilla and original (chocolate is my personal favorite).

Find it at any local Sprouts, Wholefoods or order on Amazon. Be sure to select the pea protein option vs. brown rice option.

3.  Manitoba Harvest Hemp Pro 50

This one is more raw and gritty. It literally taste as though you are drinking from the wells of mother Earth herself. Hemp has a plethora of health benefits and is ranked top on the list as a vegan protein source. It is an ideal post-workout recover when mixed with apple juice. I recommend the original (no flavor).

Find it at your local health food store or Amazon.
